Cillian Murphy: "I am a big fan of just being in the world as a normal person"

Irish actor Cillian Murphy is an internationally acclaimed A-list star who became an international pop-culture phenomenon through the iconic BBC crime series Peaky Blinders (2013–2022). In 2024, he crowned his career with the Oscar for the biographical film Oppenheimer — all while maintaining a completely nonchalant personality and a striking absence of any need for fame or self-promotion!

“READING AND ROCKING”

Cillian was born in Douglas, Ireland, and grew up with three younger siblings. His mother taught French, while his father worked for the Department of Education. His grandfather, aunts and uncles were also teachers, suggesting, alongside his Gemini Sun, a strong Sagittarius-Gemini theme around the IC/MC axis. The curious Gemini Sun at his core makes it essential for him to move through the world with an alert mind, pursue a wide variety of interests and articulate his thoughts. As a teenager, he devoured books, always on the lookout for great stories (the Sun’s ruler Mercury conjunct Venus = loves reading).

His main interest, however, initially lay in music. At the age of ten, the modest art lover began writing his own songs, and although he finally got a taste of the stage at secondary school and loved acting tremendously, he was obsessed with the desire to become a rock star. In his late teens and early twenties, he sang and played in several bands alongside his brother Páidi, who, like him, worshipped the Beatles. Venus and Taurus also represent the voice and singing! With this Venusian energy in the background, it is understandable that Cillian was less enthusiastic about the many sports lessons at school and felt that artistic talents were being neglected.

A MAGNETIC LEADER

Cillian Murphy made his acting debut as a troubled teenager in the play Disco Pigs, reprising the role later for its film adaptation. He then became a “repeat offender” when it came to working with director Christopher Nolan, who also occupied the director’s chair for the new Odyssey blockbuster. He has made a total of six films with him: initially in supporting roles (Inception, 2010), and ultimately in the lead role in Oppenheimer — earning the first Oscar for an Irishman for Best Actor!

His Sun trine Pluto and sextile Leo Mars attest to excellent leadership qualities and the magnetism so often mentioned in connection with him, while focusing his energy on plans and goals. Sun/Mars supports the spontaneity and determination of Moon/Mars, and he has the drive to explore subjects deeply and get to the very bottom of them. The threatening and calculating quality he masters so brilliantly is expressed through silence, looks and minimal gestures. This creates emotional, menacing depth, as seen for example in his signature role as gang leader and underworld boss Thomas Shelby.

As a versatile Gemini, he can command the entire spectrum from lively to vulnerable to clever, according to his co-star Emily Blunt, who plays his wife in Oppenheimer.

HOME, ROOTS AND VALUES

The actor shies away from Hollywood’s spotlight and values a simple life with his wife, artist Yvonne McGuinness, and their two sons. He maintains a rather mysterious aura and deliberately does not post on social media — a rare species these days! His home in Ireland feels familiar and safe to him, and he is deeply rooted in nature, landscape and music.

His Taurus emphasis, including the Sun’s ruler Mercury conjunct Venus, suggests that he is an extremely values-conscious and probably rather traditional person (in his 60 Minutes interview, he mentions “my values” in response to the very first question). Venus and Mercury sextile Saturn in Cancer reinforce these tendencies while also creating a pleasant atmosphere of security and rustic cosiness. Once Cillian associates something with safety and stability, he is likely to remain loyal to it for a very long time.

He has a particularly close relationship with his family and prefers living in Ireland to residing in glamorous Bel Air. His parents instilled his strong work ethic and keep him firmly grounded despite his fame (Cancer Saturn, Venus/Mercury in Taurus). Jupiter on the South Node in Taurus suggests that this grounding has already brought him positive experiences of stability, continuity and fulfilment in life, while opening up significant opportunities for growth.

The strong Taurus signature describes a mindset that carefully considers whether an investment or commitment is a good idea and whether it meets his true priorities and standards of quality. Mercury/Venus in Taurus has an appreciation for beauty, loves the domestic and handmade, and is gifted at turning down-to-earth wishes and ideas into something tangible, enduring, stable and nourishing (sextile Cancer Saturn).

He also seems to have a good relationship with the physical world and his body (Taurus): the actor has no qualms about appearing completely naked in front of the camera. Of course, he does not have to show everything every time, but if it serves the story, no problem. For Peaky Blinders, he had to gain weight and began eating meat again after 15 years as a vegetarian — certainly no easy challenge!

COOL EMOTIONS

Cillian’s Moon is most likely in Aries. It enters Taurus at 11:07 p.m., but then immediately forms a square to Mars, so in any case there is a Moon/Mars theme. This configuration reveals a very spontaneous side. He believes instinct is an actor’s best tool and loves the unpredictability of theatre – spontaneous reactions to the atmosphere in the audience or the noise of drunk people outside the venue. He can immediately absorb and process such impulses and literally bring the “rock ’n’ roll energy” of music into the theatre!

The Moon is probably square Saturn, which gives him the ability to conceal explosive feelings behind an ice-cold exterior — something he perfected in Peaky Blinders. His dry humour and tendency to mentally zoom out often elicit amused reactions in interviews. Or his facial expression can look so bored, as though he simply could not care less about anything!

In his private life, particularly with Saturn in Cancer (doubling the Moon/Saturn theme), this configuration reflects a strong emphasis on emotional security and stability, as well as considerable reserve. Cillian certainly does not pour his heart out to every stranger! This connection helps explain how fiercely he protects his private life and fits his own self-assessment of being “shy and reserved.”

ACCLAIMED ACTOR, FAILED MUSICIAN

Cillian Murphy describes himself as a “failed musician” — but certainly not because of any lack of talent. The Irishman worked hard towards a career in the music industry, and his teenage band received an offer for a major record deal in the mid-1990s. After careful consideration, they made the disappointing but ultimately probably very wise decision not to sign the contract, because Cillian’s younger brother was still at school and because signing would also have meant giving up all rights to their songs (or even more).

This story is a good example of how important his priorities were to him, and what absolutely had to be preserved and protected (Taurus). He still enjoys making music with friends — he describes it as a beautiful non-verbal way of communicating, something that is always important to Gemini!

COSMIC TENDENCIES

Transiting Uranus has been activating Cillian’s Gemini Sun since its first foray into Gemini in summer 2025 — a powerful energy that shakes loose all the unexpressed thoughts, ideas and questions. It challenges him to leave behind familiar paths and reveal new sides of himself — so perhaps he might even try social media one day?

Transiting Saturn in Aries will probably reach his Moon by summer 2027 at the latest, or at least come within a few degrees of it. If he has natal Moon square Saturn, the strong attachment to family responsibilities, bonds and stability could come into conflict with his own independent needs (Aries).

For several years now, transiting Pluto has also been working on his Leo Mars while simultaneously forming a trine to the Sun, which rules Mars. These energies, even if we cannot assign them directly to specific areas of life, point towards great passion, enthusiasm and a wealth of ideas rising up from the depths and demanding action.

In addition, Pluto is also activating Cillian’s natal Uranus, which is in mutual reception with it — and perhaps wants to break a persistent taboo? Well, he is certainly likely to do that in his own completely nonchalant way.
